'Women of Substance - 2017' awards presented by Indian Embassy in Cairo
The Embassy of India in Egypt,
felicitated 11 distinguished ladies from Egypt for their exceptional
achievements and exemplary contributions in a wide array of fields, at the
‘Women of Substance’ reception held at India House on 2 April 2017. It was part of “India
by the Nile 2017” - a
celebration of Indian music, dance, theatre, visual arts, food and Wellbeing.

Women are creating a strong
impact on a wide spectrum of platforms and thereby opening new vistas and
horizons for achievements and accomplishments. The ‘Women of Substance’
reception, was an occasion to acknowledge, celebrate, and share the
inspirational stories of these women from Egypt and saw felicitation of 10 women and 1 institution – The Charities of
Mission. From a young scientist who turned trash
into biofuel, to, educationists, filmmakers, humanitarian workers and political
leaders- this year’s ‘Women of Substance’ have made a powerful difference
through their relentless efforts and passionate determination.
These specially chosen women achievers
included Dr. Amna Nosseir, MP, Al Azhar Scholar, who took commendable took
steps to amend the anti-blasphemy law, Azza Faiad, a young scientist who turned
trash into biofuel, Heba Elsewedy, founder Ahl Masr Foundation for burn victims,
Nadia Jereidini, Vice President of Egypt-India Friendship Association, Naima
Ismail Saleh, President – The Right to Live Association, Sawsan Attia from
Women's Health Improvement Association, Shahira Fahmy, ‘Mix and Match’
designer, Wafaa El Saddik, Egyptologist and Former Director of the Egyptian
National Museum, Yasmin Helal, Founder of Educate Me for underprivileged
children, and Yosra El Lozy, Film actress.
The Missionaries of Charity
was also felicitated for its humanitarian work in Egypt. It was founded by
Mother Teresa on 07th October 1950 in Calcutta and is functional in Egypt since
1981. In Egypt they have 4 houses: Shoubra and Mukkattam in Cairo and
Alexandria and Assiut for elderly, homeless and those who have no one to care
for them. In Mukkattam and Assiut they also have day-creche for children for
poor families.

‘Women of Substance,’ is a way of recognizing
the commendable achievements of Women in Egypt and is part of “India
by the Nile 2017” festival.
